چکیده

The N available after legumes is sufficient for maximum crop yields in many cropping systems. Fertilizing without accounting for the "extra" N mineralized from legume residues can contribute to high nitrate-N concentrations in the soil during crop production and increase nitrate-N leaching potential. Tillage practices also affect the physical, biological, and chemical nature of the soil, changing the N mineralization rates and N fertilizer requirements.

Soilborne Pathogens of Cereals in an Irrigated Cropping System: Effects of Tillage, Residue Management, and Crop Rotation

Irrigated crops are produced on 645,000 ha in east-central Washington and northcentral Oregon (1). Approximately 70% of this cropland is irrigated with water diverted from rivers, while water for the remaining hectares is pumped from deep wells. Much of the irrigated cropland is found in areas of less than 200 mm annual precipitation, where dryland farming is difficult or impossible. Wind erosi...

Crop Diversification, Tillage, and Management System Influence Spring Wheat Yield and Water Use

Depleted soil quality, decreased water availability, and increased weed competition constrain spring wheat production in the northern Great Plains. New management systems are necessary for improved crop productivity. The objective of our study was to compare productivity and soil water use of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in four crop rotations (continuous wheat, wheat–pea [Pisum sativum ...

Nitrogen use efficiency and life cycle of nodules in alfalfa after different mineral fertilization and soil cultivation

Nitrogen use efficiency and life cycle of root nodules in alfalfa after different mineral fertilization and soil cultivation practices were studied. Field trial was conducted in the Institute of Forage Crops, Pleven, Bulgaria on leached chernozem subsoil type and no irrigation. The next treatments were tested: i) for fertilization as follows: N0P0K0 (control); N60P100K80 (an accepted technology...

In Winter Wheat, No-Till Increases Mycorrhizal Colonization thus Reducing the Need for Nitrogen Fertilization

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play a major role in the uptake of nutrients by agricultural plants. Nevertheless, some agricultural practices can interrupt fungal-plant signaling and thus impede the establishment of the mycorrhizal symbiosis. A field experiment performed over a 5-year period demonstrated that both the absence of tillage and of nitrogen (N) fertilization improved AMF coloniz...
